Did the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography capabilities make shooting at night easier for you?

Yes, I love shooting at night with the Galaxy S22 Ultra!

What were the Nightography features you used when directing your short film?
How easy/seamless was it shooting with the Galaxy S22 Ultra?

The best thing about shooting at night with the Galaxy S22 Ultra is that it just works out of the box. The phone automatically detects low light conditions, so I didn’t need to turn on any settings to get great footage. Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Video Digital Image Stabilisation (VDIS) automatically stabilizes footage to reduce blur. The phone also automatically reduces the shutter speed and frame rate to capture more light. Everything is so easy and seamless.

Noel Escondo and Tristan Cua

Did the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography capabilities make shooting at night easier for you?

Tristan: Indeed. With the newest sensor, we were able to capture night scenes without the help of additional portable lights as we were shooting in the street.

Noel: Definitely. S22 Ultra made it easier for us to capture night scenes with minimal to no artificial lighting. Translating the message through the lens of S22 Ultra is easy.

What were the Nightography features you used when directing your short film?

Tristan: We used the Pro Video mode for the entire film as we were in control of the camera settings, we were able to manually control the shutter speed and increase the ISO just enough to compensate the exposure of the film.

How easy was it shooting with the Galaxy S22 Ultra?

Tristan: It is handy enough to mount the phone on different video equipment system, such as tripod, gimbal, car mount.

Noel: Since it is handy, we got to shoot in the street at night with ease. Since our film also required us to shoot while it was raining, it became possible with no hassle on moving from one set to another.

Talk to us more about the camera of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, and maybe give our fans shooting tips when capturing moments/scenes.

Tristan: I love how the new S22 Ultra allows us to use all lenses when filming in 4K while using the PRO VIDEO mode, there's no need for us to use 3rd party external lenses anymore. Try playing around with the main 3 lenses (ultra wide, wide, and telephoto) it gives you variety of shots and different emotions to your film.

Noel: The good thing about the camera of Galaxy S22 Ultra is its 10x Periscope Cam because of its colors and details. Additionally, with its super clear glass lens, it can capture nighttime videos with minimal to no flares. It also has 12MP ultrawide lens which is good for capturing establishing shots.

As a seasoned director/filmmaker, what are the main differences when shooting in the morning versus at night?

Tristan: As the director of photography for the film, the challenge for me would be to maintain the cinematic look of the film and match the quality of day and night. For day since it is bright, there will be a need to use for ND filters to maintain your camera settings like the shutter speed. At night, there is a need for additional light as well to keep your subject well lit.

Noel: Times are very crucial in telling stories. It directs our narrative and sets the tone and mood of that particular scene. Nighttime shooting is more challenging as it requires to replicate the different lights and drama the darkness gives.

Tristan: The phone’s capability that allows you to use all 4 lenses while shooting in 4K is hard to find on any phone. You can figure that out by blocking each lens with your finger while switching lenses in between. The Ultra Wide is perfect for landscape photography while the Wide is for standard shots and medium shots. Lastly, the Telephoto and Super Telephoto are for Portraiture.

Noel: Get the new Galaxy S22 Ultra to start living your dreams of telling your own stories. With the new Galaxy S22 Ultra, everything is possible.

Did the Galaxy S22 Ultra’s Nightography capabilities make shooting at night easier for you?

Yes, The Galaxy S22 Ultra's sensor is great for low light, and with Pro Video mode we could easily adjust the ISO setting for the scene. We worked with little to no additional lighting equipment and utilized the ambient light around us.

What were the Nightography features you used when directing your short film?

We used Pro Video mode and tinkered with the ISO setting to get the cleanest shots for VFX use later on, and we even tried different frame rates to create impactful moments, which we later combined with VFX.

How easy/seamless was it shooting with the Galaxy S22 Ultra?

The interface was easy to navigate, and the Pro Video settings are easily accessible on screen. We were shooting on the fly and adjusting camera angles and shots quickly, allowing us to shoot an entire short film in just one night.

I would recommend to shoot at UHD 24fps to get a filmic look, always try for the wide lenses and push close to the subject to get a dynamic angle while still maintaining depth of field for a cinematic look. Always be aware of your ISO setting and adjust accordingly, I would stay at around ISO 320 or 400 at night.

As a seasoned director/filmmaker, what are the main differences when shooting in the morning versus at night?

For daylight shoots, you are always up against the sun, you will have to watch the continuity of light and shadow, and reaadjust your exposure. For night shoots, keep an eye on your ISO and color balance, and find creative use of the colors of lights and ambient lighting for emotion and impact.
